Azumino Art Line museums and galleries
Not far from Hakuba lies a hidden gem that art and nature enthusiasts will find enchanting: the Azumino Art Line. This 50 km long cultural route offers a serene journey through the heart of Azumino, a town known for its scenic beauty and rich artistic heritage.
At the foot of the beautiful Northern Japan Alps, the Azumino Art Line is one of the most interesting art areas in Japan. It connects many museums, galleries, parks, and small cultural spots across Azumino, Ikeda, Matsukawa, Omachi, and Hakuba. The area is famous for its clear streams, peaceful countryside, and mountain views. The Art Line is perfect for slow travel. You can enjoy art, nature, cafés, and local culture all in one trip.
The Azumino Art Line includes about 20 museums and galleries, making it one of Japan’s most unique cultural areas.
One of the most famous places is Rokuzan Art Museum (碌山美術館). The museum is dedicated to sculptor Morie Ogiwara, also called Rokuzan, who introduced modern sculpture to Japan. The brick building looks like a small European church and has a calm and nostalgic atmosphere.
Another important museum is Azumino Art Museum (安曇野アートヒルズミュージアム). The museum is known for its Western-style architecture, beautiful rose garden, and glass art displays.
Yukio Tabuchi Memorial Museum (田淵行男記念館) - this small galery is a must for mountain photography lovers. It honors Tabuchi’s extraordinary mountain photography and his detailed research on alpine butterflies.
Triad Iida Kan is a group of three very modernistic concrete buildings designed by Fumihiko Maki. Inside one of them you will find sculptures and oil paintings by Yoshikuni Iida.
If you enjoy traditional Japanese art, visit Azumino Takahashi Setsuro Memorial Museum (安曇野髙橋節郎記念美術館). Setsuro Takahashi created modern lacquer art by combining traditional Japanese techniques with modern design. Visitors can also see his former home and studio.
For watercolor lovers, Soyano Hisashi Suisaikan (征矢野久水彩館) displays beautiful watercolor paintings of Azumino landscapes. The artist’s soft blue colors, known as “Soyano Blue,” are especially famous.
Mountain Art Museum (安曇野山岳美術館) displays paintings inspired by mountains and alpine scenery. From the museum café terrace, you can enjoy wonderful views of the Northern Alps.
Azumino Jansem Museum (安曇野ジャンセン美術館) is the world’s first museum dedicated to French-Armenian painter Jean Jansem. Every year there are also exhibits of works of famous painters held at the museum.
Families with children will enjoy Chihiro Art Museum Azumino (安曇野ちひろ美術館). The museum showcases the works of a picture book artist Chihiro Iwasaki and her illustrations of children and flowers. The surrounding gardens add to the enchantment, providing a peaceful space to reflect on the beauty of Iwasaki's work.
Another small museum to enjoy with children is Morinoouchi Picture Book Museum (森のおうち絵本美術館). It's a charming museum set among the trees and dedicated to children's illustrated books and storytelling.
